What is Affiliate Marketing?


The decade of the 90s were responsible for this beautiful and big technology called The World Wide Web also known as the internet, the web, the vast digital ocean of information on our finger tips. With new media and technology, companies found a new opportunity of making use of the millions of websites they visit every day and to market their products and services.

Since advancements were made, after the early forms of online advertising, more accountable forms of online advertising such as affiliate marketing were formed.

I recently had the opportunity to work on an affiliate marketing training course website, which you can see here.  It was an honor to work on that site, and there is also a great promotional video you can watch on the YouTube Channel.

I don’t mention the name because that’s not the point of today’s update.  If you want the info, you can click the links yourself.  Today, I dive into just what is affiliate marketing?

So What Exactly is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is about relationships between three parties:

  • Advertiser:

A company selling the products, such as airline tickets, electronics, car parts or clothing is an “Advertiser”. An advertiser can also be a company of insurance selling policies. If you are ready to pay other people to help you promote and sell your business, you are an adviser.


A company or an individual that promotes an Advertiser’s products is a Publisher. A Publisher also offers service in exchange for earning a commission. There is an agreement between the Advertiser and the Publisher and after they contractually agree, the Advertiser provides the publisher with creative, in form of banners, links or text ads with a publisher that the publisher adds into their website.


The affiliate relationship triangle is complete with the final component which is the “Consumer”. The one who finally sees the ad and then takes an action is the consumer. He takes an action by either clicking on the link or by submitting information in a form. It takes the Consumer to the publisher’s website to the advertisers to complete the action, which can be called a “Conversion”

Why Affiliate Marketing Works well on blogs?

There are a few reasons Affiliate marketing can be profitable in this medium. One of the biggest reasons is that when there is a relationship of trust between the readership and the publisher, the affiliate marketing seems to work best. The readers will follow the recommendations of the bloggers when this trust depends and sometimes it can also be negative with affiliate marketing as the wrong product can be promoted and trust can be broken.

Easy Money?

Affiliate marketing can be amazingly profitable, it is also important to know that affiliate marketing is not easy money. It lies upon numerous factors and most people make it very little. Some of the factors are:

  • Finding the best quality products
  • Having a readership that is in the mood of buying and try developing its trust.
  • Finding products that are relevant.
  • Increase in traffic can be very helpful.
  • Building trust is important
  • Being able to write good sales copy is very important in order to attract the reader’s attention.

There are also a few risks which can be developed if you push too hard to promote a low quality product or an irrelevant product, you may lose readers and damage the reputation and brand. Note that Affiliate marketing does not work on all blogs.
